The Airborne Operation

For Operation Market the Allies used three Airborne divisions and one Parachute brigade:

 

82nd Airborne Division (American) nicknamed All American

101st Airborne Division (American) nicknamed Screaming Eagles

1st Airborne Division (British)

1st Polish independed Parachute Brigade

 

The 101st Airborne Division would have to liberate Eindhoven and conquer the bridges at Son and Veghel. The 82nd Airborne Division was tasked to conquer the bridges at Grave, Nijmegen and Wijchen and one of the four bridges over the Meuse-Waal canal. The 1st British Airborne Division commanded by Major General Roy Urquhart, together with the 1st Polish Independed Parachute Brigade commanded by General Major Stanislaw Sasabowski, would have to conquer the Rijn bridge at Arnhem.
